Authorities in Somalia have been urged to take urgent measures to investigate the murder of a journalists working for a private radio and television network in the country.

The call has come from the head of the United Nations cultural agency (UNESCO), Irina Bokova, who condemned the killing of Hassan Osman Abdi on Saturday.

Derrick Mbatha reports.

Hassan Osman Abdi, a journalist and director for Shabelle Media Network, was shot dead by five gunmen at his home in Mogadishu on 28 January, according to UNESCO.

Citing local sources, the agency says the journalist was killed after he had returned from Radio Shabelle, where he worked on political issues.

UNESCO describes the murder of Mr. Abdi as a severe blow to a country where the media have paid a heavy price for exercising the human right to freedom of expression.

The agency says that 21 Somali journalists and media workers have been listed on its webpage called UNESCO Remembers Assassinated Journalists, since 2006.
