Israeli and Palestinian negotiators have been commended by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for meeting in the Jordanian capital Amman on Tuesday.

Palestinian chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat met with his Israeli counterpart Yitzhak Molcho in the presence of the UN Special Coordinator, Robert Serry and envoys of the Middle East Quartet.

The Quartet comprises the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States.

In a statement by his spokesperson, the Secretary-General encouraged the parties to build on this meeting.

He urged them to continue working to establish what he calls "forward momentum" toward a lasting peace.

The Palestinians have been insisting that they cannot negotiate with Israel unless it stops building settlements in the occupied territories of the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
