An investigation has been launched after a bag containing sixteen kilogrammes of cocaine was found at UN headquarters in New York.

The drugs were discovered over a week ago in a bag printed with a false United Nations logo.

They have now been handed over to the US authorities.

The UN undersecretary-general for safety and security, Gregory Starr, said it was probably the work of drug traffickers.

“There is no indication whatsoever that this has anything to do with United Nations personnel or United Nations staff. These are not United Nations bags. In my humble opinion, this was the work of narcotics traffickers that were trying to ship something into the United States and I think their plan must have gone wrong.”  (Duration: 21″)
