Talks on the reunification of the island of Cyprus are due to get underway on Monday with hopes that an agreement can be reached between the two rival communities.

Ethnic strife between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots engulfed the Mediterranean island in 1974.

The UN has been trying to mediate a solution for over four decades.

Michel Bonnardeaux, a spokesperson for the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) says there are high hopes that the reunification process will move forward.

"An agreement is certainly possible. This last round of talks has lasted a little over three years now and it's certainly the UN's point of view that an agreement is possible given sufficient political will."
