Secretary-General briefs press in Addis Ababa

As the United Nations Security Council prepares to discuss a plan to resolve political unrest in Syria, the UN Secretary-General says he hopes its members will reflect the wishes of the international community.

The Arab League has proposed the plan under which President Bashar al-Assad has to relinquish power to allow a transition to democracy through elections.

Speaking in Amman, Jordan on Tuesday Mr. Ban said the crisis in Syria is a threat to regional, as well as international peace and security.

He said there have been serious violations of human rights with more than 5,000 people killed by either by the Syrian armed forces or opposition forces.

"We cannot go on like this. In that regard, the current meeting in the Security Council is crucially important. I sincerely hope that the Security Council members will be really united this time, speak and act in coherent manner, reflecting the wishes of the international community and reflecting the urgent wishes and aspirations of the Syrian people."
