Economic activities need to be revived to wean Gaza off aid

If Gaza is to come off its dependence on humanitarian aid, there has to be economic development, said Valerie Amos, the United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator.

On Wednesday, Ms. Amos briefed the Security Council on the humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory.

She spoke about the impact of continued settlement activity in the West Bank on civilians, as well as the ongoing blockade of Gaza, especially at the Karni crossing.

"That crossing is now being dismantled which means that commercial activity into Gaza and in particular exports coming out of Gaza into the West Bank and Israel will decrease, which again will have the impact of de-developing Gaza rather than re-developing Gaza.

Karni was the only commercial crossing with the facilities to allow large numbers of trucks to enter Gaza, according to the UN.

Closed to trucks since 2007, it was operating as a conveyor belt to allow grain deliveries only.
