International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Women around the world are acting with dignity and determination to overcome the abuses that they frequently face. That's according to the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, who has been discussing the challenges the world body faces in 2012. He said the establishment last year of the new agency UN Women showed the United Nations is committed to helping women overcome the problems they face. Maha Fayek asked the Secretary-General what women around the world are expecting from him.

Cash handouts for poorest Liberians

The poorest women in Liberia, are being given cash handouts as a first step to getting out of poverty. It's estimated that almost half of the population in the West African country is living in poverty that's despite years of economic growth there. The amount of money the poorest people receives is relatively low just $25 a month but for many it's a crucial lifeline. Charles Appel has more details.

Mexican women fight exploitation

A growing number of women are facing exploitation on the streets of Mexico City one of the world's largest cities that's according to organizations in the Central American country that are working to protect women from prostitution and homelessness. More and more young people, especially women, are ending up on the streets of the metropolis. Many set up home in flimsy shacks, often turning to gangs for protection and survival. Pat Duffy reports.
