China reports bird flu death

Keiji Fukuda

China has reported that a man has died after contracting bird flu also known as the H5N1 virus.

The Chinese Ministry of Health told the World Health Organization (WHO) that a 39 year-old male from Guangdong Province developed symptoms on 21 December. WHO says the death brings the number of people killed by bird flu to 27 in China. The death comes at a time when WHO is becoming increasingly concerned that new research could undermine a preparedness framework, called PIP that was agreed by the international community in 2011. Alpha Diallo has been speaking to Dr Keiji Fukuda, WHO Assistant Director-General. He started by asking him about the danger posed by the virus.
