Resolving the humanitarian challenges in Côte d'Ivoire is critical for the country's development.

That's the assessment of Catherine Bragg, the UN Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, who briefed journalists in New York on Tuesday following her recent three-day mission to the West African nation.

She said more than two million Ivoirians remain highly vulnerable nine months after post-election violence displaced thousands.

"It is crucial that we do not lose sight of these humanitarian needs because addressing them will be a key condition for the country's successful transition to reconstruction and development. This is an historic opportunity for Côte d'Ivoire and it is one we cannot afford to miss." (Duration: 17")

The UN and its partners are appealing for $173 million to assist Côte d'Ivoire.
