Aid agencies in north-east Afghanistan are finding it hard to deliver food and medical supplies to villagers trapped by heavy snowfall and landslides, according to OCHA, the UN's humanitarian agency. A record number of African refugees made the perilous journey across the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea in 2011. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) says despite increased insecurity in Yemen, 103,000 people—mostly Ethiopians and Somalis—risked their lives in the crossing.
