The Yemen authorities have lost control of a part of their territory to rebels from the Al-Qaeda terrorist group, according to the UN Special Adviser on Yemen.

The country has been facing political turmoil this year as Yemenis protested against unemployment, economic conditions and corruption and demanded the resignation of their President, Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Al-Qaeda has been able to step into the vacuum created by the political instability.

Gerry Adams reports.
