Viet Nam urged to shut sex worker and drug addict centres

Anand Grover, UN Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health

Viet Nam has been urged to close its compulsory rehabilitation centres for sex workers and drug users.

A senior UN official has said that detention and forced treatment are a violation of human rights and perpetuate discrimination in society.

Speaking at the end of a visit to the country, the Special Rapporteur on the right to health, Anand Grover, called the rehabilitation "ineffective and counterproductive."

He encouraged the Vietnamese Government to redirect its resources to expand alternative treatments for drug addicts.
