Five United Nations peacekeepers serving in Lebanon were injured in a bomb blast earlier on Friday while travelling to the country's south.

The vehicle of the injured peacekeepers was apparently targeted while driving through the outskirts of the port city Tyre, according to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL.

The mission has sent forensic and investigation teams to probe the facts and circumstances surrounding the attack.

Meanwhile, the injured blue helmets were evacuated for further medical care, after being treated at the scene.

The mission, which has been operating since 1978, currently has just over 12,000 peacekeepers from 35 countries deployed in Lebanon.
