Humanitarian Aid in the Philippines

Emergency operations are underway on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines which was hit by a tropical storm two weeks ago.

Tropical Storm Washi washed away entire villages, destroying nearly 13,000 houses and left about 400,000 people homeless.

The United Nations Humanitarian Agency (OCHA), has allocated $3 million from the UN's Central Emergency Response  Fund (CERF) to provide shelter, water, sanitation and food to victims of the storm.

Kirsten Mildren of OCHA in the Philippines says the funds have been crucial for responding to the disaster.

"The storm actually hit just a few days before Christmas and so the launch and appeal a few days after that and so this week after Christmas is a week when donors are mostly away and the offices are closed. And so there hasn't been an amazing outpouring of support that you might normally see after an emergency of this nature. And so the CERF funds were instrumental in making some of these life-saving activities really start."
