Five election experts have been deployed by the United Nations to help Yemen prepare for early presidential election scheduled for 21 February next year.

The UN envoy for Yemen Jamal Benomar, told reporters on Wednesday that there has been progress in implementing last month's political settlement under which President Abdullah Saleh stepped down.

Mr. Benomar said the government of National Unity, sworn in on 10 December has already taken action to restore peace and stability in the country.

"Preparations are well under way for early presidential elections on 21 February. The challenges to holding elections on time are not insignificant with funding being the primary immediate concern, particularly with only 60 days remaining until the elections. I am happy to report that a team of five UN electoral experts has just been deployed to assist the Electoral Commission during this critical preparatory period."
