UN calls for urgent access to S Kordofan and Blue Nile States

As fighting rages on in South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, the UN humanitarian chief is calling for free and unfettered access to the two Sudanese states.

Valerie Amos said her visit to Sudan was postponed by Sudan's Government and she was hoping to re-schedule soon.

Given the continued denial of humanitarian access to South Kordofan and Blue Nile, Ms. Amos said the United Nations must plan for inevitable deterioration in conditions over there.

Malnutrition is on the rise, and unexploded ordnance and landmines pose a serious threat to civilians.

There have also been reports of aerial and artillery bombings, endangering people on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, she added.
