Act against corruption today

The international community has been urged to fight what the UN Chief Ban Ki-moon has called the cancer of corruption.

In a message to mark International Anti-Corruption Day on Friday, Mr. Ban said corruption undermines social progress and breeds inequality and injustice.

Daniel Dickinson reports.

It's been eight years since the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

The Secretary-General said no country, region or community is immune to it.

The UN chief said that when development funds are stolen by corrupt individuals and institutions, it's the poorest and most vulnerable people who are robbed of an education, health care and other essential services.

He urged countries across the world to crack down on corruption and to shame those people who practise it.
