Syria death toll tops 5000

Listen /

More than 5,000 people have died since the start of the popular uprising in Syria, according to the United Nations human rights chief.

Navi Pillay briefed the Security Council on Monday and warned that a crackdown and fresh eruption of violence could be imminent in Homs, one of the country's key cities.

The uprising in Syria is part of a broader popular protest movement that has led to the toppling of long-term regimes in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen.

Navi Pillay also said the crimes against humanity have probably been committed.

"The widespread and systematic nature of the killings, the detentions and the acts of torture, I felt that these acts constituted crimes against humanity and I recommended that there should be a  referral to the International Criminal Court."
