The United Nations humanitarian chief has welcomed Sweden's additional contribution of $10 million to help respond to the crisis engulfing the Horn of Africa.

Sweden, a key donor to UN aid operations, has already given $123 million to the Horn of Africa crisis so far this year.

Valerie Amos, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, was recently in Sweden to discuss the situation in the Horn and other humanitarian issues.

At least four million people continue to need urgent assistance in Somalia alone and people are also suffering in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya as a result of drought, famine and insecurity, according to Amos.

The donation will be used to help fund emergency food supplies, the provision of clean water and treatment for severely malnourished children.
