Storm claims over 950 lives in the Philippines

WFP's High Energy Biscuits arrive at the airport in Cagayan de Oro in the southern Philippines.

Relief aid is being delivered by UN agencies to people affected by Tropical Storm Wash which hit the Philippines over the weekend leaving over 950 people dead.

The World Food Programme is providing food and other logistical support to help the government's emergency relief efforts in Northern Mindanao.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) is delivering supplies to 15,000 people.

UNICEF spokesperson, Marixie Mercado says her agency has launched an appeal for $4.2 million.

"Our latest figures are of 957 deaths with dozens still reported missing. An estimated 200,000 children are affected including 20,000 who are currently in evacuation centres. A majority of the funds we are appealing for will support water and sanitation interventions which have been identified by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee and the Humanitarian Assessment Team as one of the most significant priorities."
