"Spectacular" expansion of Al-Qaeda in Yemen

Armed groups often use traditionally safe places such as schools, hospitals, and mosques as targets or as operational bases.

Al-Qaeda insurgents have taken control of strategic territory in the southern part of Yemen over the past few months, according to a senior United Nations official.

Jamal Benomar, the United Nations envoy for Yemen said on Wednesday that Al-Qaeda now controls three cities.

Mr. Benomar said there is concern in the international community over a link between instability in Yemen and international peace and security.

He said the new government in Yemen is going to have a huge challenge of re-establishing control over the various parts of the country that are currently lawless.

"Definitely one thing that happened in Yemen in the last few months is the spectacular development and expansion of Al-Qaeda activity in the south, particularly in the province of Abyan and for the first time in history, Al- Qaeda in Yemen was able to hold strategic territory and despite all the efforts of government and others they continue to occupy cities and territory that is not that far from the City of Aden, the capital of the south."
