Russia calls for investigation of NATO bombings in Libya

Vitaly Churkin

Russia has called for investigations into the civilian casualties caused by NATO bombings during the conflict in Libya.

The aerial bombings were conducted under a Security Council resolution that authorized NATO to protect civilians from the forces loyal to Muammar Qadhafi.

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin spoke to reporters following a behind-closed door meeting of the Council.

"In my national capacity as a Russian Permanent Representative I can tell you that we did raise the need for a UN investigation or under the aegis of the United Nations, a special investigation for the civilian casualties inflicted by NATO bombing campaign. And there was another delegation which made the same kind of request and they were supported by some other delegations of the Council. But, as you can imagine, there was a certain exchange of views on this issue."

Ambassador Churkin said some members of the Council said the matter is already covered by a panel set up by the UN Human Rights Council.
