Refugee leader shot dead in Kenyan camp

Somali refugees stand by their tents at Dadaab in north-west Kenya.

A refugee leader has been shot dead at a camp for Somali refugees in north-eastern Kenya.

The man, who hasn't been named, was chairperson of a community group which helps to maintain security in the camp.

He was shot several times and died on the way to the hospital.

A motive for the killing has not been established.

Vivian Tan, a Nairobi-based spokesperson for the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, which runs the camp, says insecurity is a growing problem.

"Dadaab is a sprawling camp and the population has grown dramatically over the past year. We are working closely with the Kenyan authorities to try to ensure there is adequate security, but given recent developments, I think it is a sign that we need to do more collectively."

Dadaab is the world's largest refugee camp and currently accommodates over 460,000 people.
