UNFPA helps prevent maternal and newborn deaths in flood-affected areas in the Philippines

Thousands of pregnant and lactating women in areas affected by a storm that hit the Philippines two weeks ago are getting help from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The government of the Philippines estimates that 92,000 families or 640,000 people have been affected by the storm which destroyed buildings including health centres.

Henia Dakkak of UNFPA says pregnant or lactating women are among the affected people who need life-saving assistance.

"We estimated there is around 12,000 pregnant women and lactating women in various evacuation centres in the areas affected by the Tropical Storm. So we at the moment are distributing clean delivery kits which basically will help women deliver even if they don't have any medical assistance at least safely and cleanly. And at the same time we are also providing them with reproductive health kits for health facilities that are able to perform at the moment."
