Palestinian flag raised at UNESCO

The Palestinian flag was raised at the headquarters of the UN cultural agency, UNESCO, in Paris on Tuesday to mark its admission to the Organization.

Palestine was elected as the 195th Member of UNESCO in October this year.

The President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, attended the flag-raising ceremony, together with UNESCO's Director-General Irina Bokova and representatives of regional groups.

The representative of Palestine to UNESCO, Ambassador Elias Sanbar said that Palestinians are proud that Palestine has been admitted to UNESCO as a country.

“Secondly, we are very proud to have got this membership.  This shows how much we do care about education, culture, and that despite very difficult conditions which we know in our daily lives, either within the occupied territories or in the many countries of the Palestinian exile, we are very proud to show the world that we are still very active, that we have a real vitality in culture and science and art.”  (Duration: 29″)

UNESCO is the first UN agency to admit Palestine as a full member.
