Listen /

Khadzhimurad Kamalov

Russian authorities have been urged by the United Nations to investigate the murder of a Russian journalist and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Khadzhimurad Kamalov, the founder and editor of an independent weekly newspaper was shot dead in Dagestan last week.

The UN human Rights Office has condemned the killing of the journalist which, it says, is the latest in a series of attacks against journalists, human rights activists and lawyers.

Rupert Colville is the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human rights.

"We are deeply concerned about the murder of Russian journalist Khadzhimurad Kamalov in Dagestan last week. Kamalov had reported extensively on alleged abuses by the police and other human rights violations in Dagestan and his murder sends a chilling message to journalists seeking to cover such issues."
