More migrants pushed into hands of people traffickers

World Migration Report

An increasing number of migrants are being driven into the hands of people traffickers, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In its World Migration Report released on Tuesday, the IOM says that up to a billion people have been on the move in 2011.

Director General William Swing says many people are migrating illegally.

"The cruel irony is that more and more governments are turning inwards, borders are being closed, visa regimes are being tightened. There is less and less opportunity for migration to occur on a legal basis, so a lot of people are being pushed into the hands of traffickers."
