Ten public-private partnerships have been launched under an initiative called momentum for change at the Durban climate conference in South Africa, also known as COP 17.

The projects showcase new ways of overcoming poverty and moving to a low carbon economy.

One such project is in Durban where local communities are trained to manage reforestation by becoming 'tree-preneurs.'

Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework on Climate Change Convention, says the projects help dispel the misconception that no work is being done on the ground.

"Secondly, there is a misperception that the private sector can only act on climate change without risk once absolute policy certainty has been established at the international level. And thirdly, there is a misperception that acting on climate change whether that be on adaptation or mitigation is so expensive that it is actually impossible."
