Men and women face poverty differently, says gender expert

Women who take care of the family and carry out domestic chores often receive no income for their work. But this role also limits them from accessing other sources of income.

They often are forced to do odd jobs or depend on precarious forms of employment, according to Nailia Kabeer, author of a UN report on women and development.

At a global forum in Salzburg, Austria, she told Tina Micklethwait that these are just some of the reasons why men and women face different consequences of poverty and social exclusion.
