Laurent Koudou Gbagbo in Courtroom I of the International Criminal Court, The Hague, Netherlands

Former President Laurent Gbagbo of Côte d'Ivoire has appeared before the International Criminal Court (ICC), on Monday to go through the formalities of confirming his identity.

Mr. Gbagbo is facing charges of crimes against humanity committed, after his refusal to concede defeat in last year's presidential election sparked violence in the West African country.

The ICC is holding him personally responsible for the crimes, which include murder, rape and other forms of sexual violence.

ICC Spokesperson Fadi El Abdallah spoke to Derrick Mbatha about the former president's first day in court.
