Joseph Kabila re-elected as DRC president

Joseph Kabila Kabange, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Joseph Kabila has been re-elected as President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with 49 per cent of the votes, according to provisional results announced on Friday by the Independent National Electoral Commission or CENI.

The announcement has been delayed for the past two days because of logistical problems, electoral officials say.

The main opposition party has threatened to hold mass rallies to protest Kabila's re-election, according to the UN backed Radio Okapi.

Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General has urged for calm and restraint, asking candidates and their supporters to refrain from any acts of violence.

Mr Ban noted that any differences regarding the provisional results of the polls could be resolved peacefully through mediation, including the National Mediation Committee.
