Volunteers spread awareness about human rights in schools

The biggest challenge that volunteers face is the recognition of their work, according to the deputy executive coordinator of UN Volunteers.

Naheed Haq says each of the 8,000 UN Volunteers or UNVs, who serve in difficult missions or in developing countries, do so with a sense of vision and purpose.

Ms. Haq was speaking on International Volunteer Day that is being observed on 5 December.

A major report on the state of world volunteerism is being launched in New York on this day.

The General Assembly is also expected to adopt a resolution to recognize the work of volunteers in peace and development throughout the world.

Ms. Haq spoke to Aditya Mehta about the impact of volunteerism and its core values such as engaging people in development and social mobilization.
