The human rights of gay and transgender people are being systematically violated across the world according to the UN's first ever report on the issue.

Homosexuality is illegal in over 70 countries.

The report to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) says that gay men and women and transgender people have been killed, raped or tortured because of their sexuality.

Charles Radcliffe from OHCHR, says homosexuality should not be banned because of religious of cultural beliefs.

"What we are talking about here is universal human rights; making sure that everyone is entitled to the same rights. No religious belief of prevailing cultural value can justify stripping people of their basic rights."
