Floods make thousands homeless in TanzaniaListen /
At least 20 people are reported to have been killed and thousands of others made homeless by floods caused by three days of heavy rains in the Tanzanian commercial capital of Dar es Salaam.
The UN Development Programme (UNDP) is working with its partners to gauge the support that the Tanzanian government needs to help the affected people.
UNDP's Country Director is Philippe Poinsot.
"What has happened and, hopefully we have seen the worst of it, is heavy rains for almost like three days now, this combined with some high tide, created some flooding in a very densely populated area in Dar. From what we know there are about 5,000 people displaced. A large number of families have been affected."
The rains are the heaviest the East African country has experienced for more than 50 years according to the Tanzania Meteorological Agency.
