people of African descent

Countries must boost efforts to combat discrimination, racism, and xenophobia, according to the UN Deputy Secretary-General.

Asha-Rose Migiro made her remarks at the closing of the International Year for People of African Descent.

The year was proclaimed by the General Assembly to secure the human rights of all people of African descent and to ensure their participation and integration in society.

Ms. Migiro said she was pleased by the advances made over the past year, pointing to the General Assembly's recent adoption of a consensus text against racism and xenophobia.

But, she added, that more need to be done through education and activism.
