A programme to speed up voluntary male circumcision to prevent HIV has been launched by the UN and US Government in Ethiopia on Monday.

The five-year plan calls for the immediate expansion of male circumcision services in 14 countries in eastern and southern Africa.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the practice can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by 60 per cent.

550,000 men have already been circumcised in the 14 priority countries.
