Bahrain urged to release political prisoners

Listen /

Navi Pillay

Authorities in Bahrain have been urged to release political prisoners as part of confidence-building measures in the country.

The Gulf state has faced mass demonstrations for political freedom over recent months

Charles Appel reports.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said the prompt release of thousands of people detained for participating in demonstrations in Bahrain could help to address the "deepening mistrust" between the government and public.

She also urged the authorities to address the economic and social rights of thousands of people who have lost their jobs after participating in protests.

The UN human rights chief stressed the need to deal with impunity at all levels.

That includes the security forces which are accused of using excessive force against demonstrators and those who have tortured people in detention.

A UN delegation went to Bahrain last week at the invitation of the government.
