People around the world have become more aware of their human rights, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay.

Ms. Pillay spoke on the occasion of Human Rights Day to mark the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 1948.

She said the social media's ability to spread the message is a powerful new tool to ensure that more and more people demand and defend their human rights.

"Awareness of human rights at the individual level is growing regardless of state policies owing partly to social media and the Internet. The protests against dictatorship that has marked the Arab Spring have also demonstrated that the previous narrow measurement of stability through economic growth, foreign investment and national security are insufficient for a truly stable and sustainable society. Human rights must also be part of the equation."
