Afghan civilians killed in explosions on Muslim holy day

Muharram (Arabic: محرم) is the first month of the Islamic calendar

The UN mission in Afghanistan has strongly condemned the indiscriminate attacks on Afghan civilians on Tuesday.

Scores of Afghan civilians were killed after bombs exploded in the cities of Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif.

The people had gathered to mourn on the occasion of the Tenth of Muharam, a Muslim holy day.

UNAMA described the attacks as 'brutal', 'illegal' and 'completely unacceptable'.

The attacks follow an international conference in Bonn, Germany to discuss the future of Afghanistan when international forces pull out in 2014.
