Additional sanctions imposed on Eritrea

• Eritrea has been slapped with additional sanctions by the Security Council for destabilizing the Horn of Africa. Eritrea has also been accused of plotting to carry out bomb attacks in Addis Ababa early this year. The sanctions resolution was adopted by 13 votes in favour with China and Russia abstaining.

UN allocates $6 million to combat food crisis in Niger

• Niger is set to get some badly-needed relief to address food insecurity in the West African country. A fund managed by the UN Relief Agency, OCHA, has allocated $6 million to three UN agencies, including the World Food Programme. More than half of Niger is currently affected by the food crisis.

Laurent Gbagbo appears before International Criminal Court

• Former President Laurent Gbagbo of Côte d'Ivoire has appeared before the International Criminal Court (ICC) to face charges of crimes against humanity. They include murder, rape and other forms of sexual violence. The ICC says he is personally responsible for the crimes committed during the violence that followed last year's presidential election.
