flood victims in Central America

Up to 300,000 people affected by floods in Central America are getting emergency food assistance from the World Food Programme (WFP).

The agency says it is working with governments to find out how many people are in need and for how long they will need food assistance.

WFP is also helping communities to cope with periodic food insecurity.

It says that floods are worsening food insecurity in rural and urban areas.

The United Nations has appealed to the international community for $4.1 million to help El Salvador and nearly $9 million for Nicaragua.
