UNESCO to halt new programmes after US boycott

Irina Bokova, UNESCO's Director-General

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO will suspend new programmes until the year end. This after the United States pulled its funding.

The Agency, which is headquartered in Paris, faces a shortfall of $65 million dollars as a result of America's decision to halt contributions, following Palestine's recent membership into the organization.

Irina Bokova, UNESCO's head, said the agency will have to take radical measures and cut new projects as well as trim ongoing costs such as staff travel and publications.

Meanwhile, UNESCO has appealed to member countries and other organizations to bridge the shortfall.
