UN warns of violence in run-up to DR Congo elections

Human rights abuses in DRC

• A UN human rights agency has warned about human rights violations and political violence in the run-up to elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The presidential and parliamentary polls are scheduled for November 28. It's the second time since its independence in 1960 that the DRC will be holding democratic elections.

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf set to retain power in Liberia

• Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is set to win the presidential run-off elections held on Tuesday. According to preliminary results released by the National Electoral Commission, she got over 90 % of the votes. President Johnson-Sirleaf ran unopposed after the leader of the opposition party, Winston Tubman,  boycotted the election.   

India donates machine to Namibia to treat cancer

India-Namibia agreement

• Efforts to fight cancer in Namibia got a boost with a radiotherapy machine donated by India. The country of over 2.2 million people has only one machine to treat cancer patients. India's donation is part of the UN nuclear agency's Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy.
