UN chief concerned about loss of funding for UNESCO

General Conference admits Palestine as UNESCO Member State

Concern has been expressed by the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, about the loss of funding for the UN cultural agency (UNESCO).

The United States has decided to withdraw its contributions to UNESCO following its admission of Palestine as a full member early this week.

Spokesperson Vannina Maestracci is travelling with Mr. Ban who is attending the meeting of leaders of the major economic powers known as the G20 in Cannes, France.

She explains the Secretary-General's thinking about this matter.

"Of course the decision to admit Palestine as a UNESCO member state is a decision of the member states and it's a prerogative of the member states but for the Secretary-General it's basically making sure that UNESCO can continue working and he hopes that he can work with the member states and find practical solutions to preserve, basically UNESCO's financial resources."
