UN Chief calls for restraint during DRC elections

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged political leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo to exercise restraint ahead of the country's elections scheduled for Monday.

In his message, the UN Chief asked the politicians and their followers to respect the Constitution and electoral law.

If the election results are in dispute, there are legal means to settle the differences, he adds.

To the Congolese people, Mr. Ban Ki-moon promised the full support of the United Nations throughout the electoral process.

Meanwhile, he reminded the Government of its responsibility to make sure the elections are peaceful.

He underscored the need for both local and international election observers as well as members of political parties to be present at the polling stations.
