Rwanda Girl Guides Association focuses on men to end violence against women

The Girl Guides Association in Rwanda is working to end violence against women and girls. They've joined the "Stop the violence. Speak out for girls' rights" campaign of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Since 2003 the Girl Guides of Rwanda have been raising awareness and sensitizing women to speak up about their rights. But according to Pascaline Umulisa, Communications Commissioner of the Association, educating men about violence is just as important.

Tanzanian student wins UN award for ending violence against women

Secretary-General meets Mwasapi Kihongosi

UNICEF in Tanzania recently launched a report on violence against children, which revealed that over 28 per cent of girls in the country experience sexual violence before they turned 18. Through a UN competition, young people were encouraged to think of ways to end such violence. A Tanzanian student, Mwasapi Kihongosi, won the award. He came up with the idea of a t-shirt which portrays the family and its response to violence against women. Stella Vuzo spoke to Mwasapi Kihongosi about going to New York to receive the prize from the UN Secretary-General on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence agaist Women, the 25th of November.

UNHCR reports on child marriage in the Central African Republic

A high incidence of underage marriage and the widespread use of  child labour are occurring in the Central African Republic, a landlocked country in central Africa, says the UN refugee agency, UNHCR. Displaced civilians in northern Central African Republic are the ones most affected. Fatoumata Lejeune-Kabba, author of a report on the subject, said UNHCR and the Danish Refugee Council surveyed 300 families from a population of 17 thousand near the town of Ndele between May and September 2011.
