Reports of massive violations in Syria, including torture of children

Claudio Grossman

Children are reportedly being tortured and mutilated in Syrian prisons, according to a group of UN experts on torture.

The United Nations Committee against torture on Friday said it has reviewed numerous, consistent and substantiated reports about widespread human rights violations in the country.

Systematic attacks by security forces against civilians are also common, the panel said.

Peaceful demonstrators are being killed and excessive force is being used against them.

Claudio Grossman, who chairs the panel, has more.

"We mentioned torture and ill treatment of detainees including children who have suffered torture and mutilation while detained. Based on those allegations that are coming from authoritative sources, we mentioned all of those, asking the State party to respond to those before March 10th."

Grossman said the group is alarmed that these violations are taking place in total impunity.

There have been no investigations so far, he added.
