A forum on establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East is taking place in Vienna, Austria, organized by the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Member states are discussing how the experience gained through the already established Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones could be relevant to the Middle East.

IAEA Director-General, Yukiya Amano, says it has taken 11 years to reach this point:

"There is broad international support for the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. But, among countries of the Middle East region and beyond, there are also long-standing differences of view related to the establishment of such a zone and the application of comprehensive Agency safeguards to all nuclear activities in the region."

Duration: 26''

Iran is absent from these talks.

The IAEA recently passed a resolution on Iran, urging it to allow experts into the country to verify it is not developing nuclear weapons.

Iran, on the other hand, continues to insist its nuclear programme is being used to generate electricity.
