"Intangible heritage" list set to be updated

More than 80 nominations for a list which aims to protect intangible cultural heritage are due to be considered at a meeting starting in Bali, Indonesia on Tuesday.

Intangible cultural heritage as defined by the UN's cultural organization, UNESCO, includes oral traditions, traditional craftsmanship, social practices and knowledge of the natural world.

The new nominations being considered by UNESCO include Saman dance from Indonesia and Mariachi music from Mexico.

Mali, Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire will also present a multi-national nomination, related to the traditions of the Balafon and Senufo communities.
