Head of UNESCO calls for continued U.S. support

Irina Bokova, UNESCO's Director-General

The United States has been urged by the head of the United Nations cultural agency (UNESCO), to continue to fund the agency's work around the world.

It follows the US decision  to withdraw funding worth $60 million after Palestine was granted full membership of the agency.

Charles Appel reports.

The United States is a critical partner to the work of UNESCO, according to its Director-General, Irina Bokova.

US funding helps UNESCO to develop the media in Iraq, Tunisia and Egypt.

In Afghanistan with US support, UNESCO is helping the agency to teach thousands of police officers to read and write.

Ms. Bokova said that funds provided by the United States and Israel, are helping UNESCO to develop curricula to ensure that the Holocaust is never forgotten.
